This thread is for quotes, poems, or other literary elements you've found over the years that stick with you. They can be dark, happy, catchy, whatever, just list your reason for posting them after the quote. If Possible, please list the author of the quote as well. Feel free to post any quotes you may have come up yourself ;D
"...Numbers have dehumanized us. Over breakfast coffee we read of over 40,000 American dead in Vietnam. Instead of vomiting, we reach for the toast... An equation: 40,000 dead young men= 3,000 tons of bone and flesh, 124,000 pounds of brain matter, 50,000 gallons of blood, 1,840,000 years of life that never will be lived, 100,000 children who will never be born. (the last we can afford: there are too many starving children in the world already.) Do we scream in the night when it touches our dreams? No. We don't dream about it because we don't think about it; we don't think about it because we don't care about it..." -Dalton Trumbo, Los Angeles, January 3, 1970
Bit of a dark one to start with, but very powerful. I took this from the intro to the book Johnny Got His Gun, which I am reading in English. I don't care much for the book, but the I love the intro. Even though this was some 36 years ago things like Vietnam are still happening, and we turn a blind eye. If you ever get the chance, read the full intro, their's many more good points in it. Just think, I used to want to go into the armed services.
The Road Not Taken Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
This one is a classic, most of you have probably seen it already. Yet I try use this poem as one of the fundamental guidelines of my life. I heard this one sometime in grade school, and haven't forgotten it since.
"Which instills the most fear in you The thought of living forever Or the thought of not" -Samuel Hassett
Yah it's true, I made this one. It's in my opinion the best thing I've ever written. Some years ago I used to be so afraid of living forever (I thought it would be boring) I would lay awake crying at night. Now, I'm afraid of not living forever(though i don't lay awake at night anymore) because after this life is over, there are people I still want to live and experience things with. Edit: to clarify, by living forever I mean life after death.
I'll have more to come later, but these 3 are probaly the most powerful pieces of literature in my life. And I want to see what you guys post before I post some more.

"friends dont let friends drive without a gunner" - good friend of mine talking about HALO
"Given the choice, whether to rule a corrupt and failing empire; or to challenge the fates for another throw - a better throw - against one's destiny... what was a king to do? But does one even truly have a choice? One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate... and thus defy the tyrannous stars. " -Kain, Legacy in of kain:Defiance

"Goero never dies!" Kiero spoken at 3:30 in the morning, on a sugar rush and watching me fight a Original Enemy on FFX for 2 hours straight, watching it kill me only for me to get back up over and over again.

O.o cool thread! I used to write poems, but haven't in a while as I've been too happy and comfortable.. It seems to be a rule that you need to be miserable in order to write. Well maybe this thread will be an inspiration ^.^ In the meantime here's a few words I love.
P.S. this post might be long...
The Thuathan De Danaan, by Ardja
There is much written about people such as us. There is much yet there is nothing. Wind through the trees, no substance, Which is almost as it should be, almost.
Memory is fragile, memory and delusion entertwine, delusion reigns.
We are children of Life, We do not speak from memory, We are the memory.
We live our lives, waking, sleeping and dreaming As who we are, We do not understand claims of greatness When we were never great.
We lived, we live, by our honour; If that honour leads to deeds recounted, It is the honour that is great.
The people are a reflection, transparent, and only by our honour do we offer something solid to the world. It is only by our honour that we are known. Honour is our King, we are.
We do not live in the world, But within the worlds, active through inaction. We watch and listen and involve ourselves on a whim.
We scheme and plan and plot, laughing at all that we do. We have love and no love for this world and it's population. We are restless.
Always moving, always flowing into change, Creating change for our pleasure. Plucking the threads of the weave for change's sake.
We play.
Our understanding of today may be casually shed tomorow, And it matters not. One might wonder what then does matter to such as us?
Bones and blood matter, the life matters, Truth at it's ugliest matters, The bones and flesh of the earth matters.
We die easily for these things, We die smiling as the meaninglessof it all. The only thing that binds us, is our word.
Never Fear a Tearby me ^.^
In the Shadow Grove For all eternal song In the early breeze of morn Don't be afraid to cry. In the Greener Grove For our younger days In the hail and storms of our ways Don't be afraid to try. In the Blazing Grove For everlasting leaves In the late chime of eve Don't be afraid to die. For all that comes to you Is ever so true Face hardship with love Learn, listen and don't be afraid to cry.
And a quote:
"The trick is not how much pain you feel- But how much joy you feel. Any idiot can feel pain, Life is full of excuses to feel pain, excuses not to live, excuses, excuses, excuses." -- Erica Jong

Memorable Quotes from Unforgiven (1992) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will Munny: Who's the fellow owns this #$%hole? [pause]
Will Munny: You, fat man. Speak up.
Skinny Dubois: Uh, I... I own this establishment. I bought the place from Greeley for a thousand dollars.
[Will levels the shotgun, and speaks to someone standing behind Skinny]
Will Munny: You better clear outta there.
Man: Yes, sir. [scampers out of the way]
Little Bill Daggett: Just hold it right there. Hold it...!
[Will shoots Skinny. Screaming, the women scatter upstairs]
Little Bill Daggett: Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!
Will Munny: Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend.
Little Bill Daggett: You'd be William Munny out of Missouri. Killer of women and children.
Will Munny: That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.
[Will takes aim at Little Bill]

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable."

Nice Stuff everyone! Especially you Hazina.
I got these next few quotes just skimmin around some quote sites cause I'm bored.
"The hardest of all is learning to be a well of affection, and not a fountain; to show them we love them not when we feel like it, but when they do." -Nan Fairbrother
"To fall in love is easy, even to remain in it is not difficult; our human loneliness is cause enough. But it is a hard quest worth making to find a comrade through whose steady presence one becomes steadily the person one desires to be." -Anna Louise Strong
"The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them. " -Thomas Merton
"When will the state of the country be sound?... When its people believe that the end result of cowardice is more disastrous than that of behaving with integrity." -Naguib Mahfouz,
Man who sneezes without hanky takes matters into his own hands.
War does not determine who is right, war determine who is left
Mines are equal opportunity weapons.
Happiness is not a goal but a way of travel.
You know you are in love when you see the world in her eyes, and her eyes everywhere in the world. - David Levesque

A quote from one of the books from the series of Discworld.
"In the beginning there was nothing, then god created the light... now there was still nothing, but this time you could see it."

I saw a man pursuing the horizon Round and round they sped.
I was disturbed at this I accosted the man. "It is futile," I said
"You can never-" "You lie," he cried, And ran on.

"Privileged, a chosen few Blessed with our time in hell Witness a divine vision, the day we all fell still. Rapture of the dying age, a shattered hourglass Wrath of the warring gods and soon this too shall pass. It's only getting worse, not worth a moment's regret Each dawn another curse, every breath a twisting blade What will be left behind in the ashes of the wake? An ill wind blows this way, the edge of the envelope burns Forbearance and my vengance, payment for your intent Fear death in the wings, in thrall of those fallen from grace Petty is as petty does, witness the mass disgrace. (Fear and death in the wings, in thrall of those fallen from grace Petty is as petty does, witness the mass disgrace.) God forbid you read the signs. Watch for meaning between the lines Gehenna has now arrived, no hindsight for the blind. Your trust has been misplaced, believed the lies told to your face Became another casualty and now it's too late. You finally made it home, draped in the flag that you fell for. And so it goes The ashes of the wake. It's only getting worse..."
my favorite lyrics in a song :x

I use to have a little pocket notebook full of quotes or crazy things i would hear from my daily ventures (aka running around outside). Only problem was that one day I lost it and never actually bothered to start it over again. Within it, it had the many things (mostly stupid if not inspiring, altho more stupid things than not) I would hear from either complete strangers or friends that amused me along with a time and place in which I heard it. If I didn't know the person I would at least write a little discription so I could have a reference of what kind of human would say such a thing.

I dunno really, I must of had well over a thousand quotes. If anything I just hope someone found it and maybe kept it rather than it ending up in the trash. For all I know that person might have started writing his own stuff and lost it too, probably leaving it at a bus stop for another person to find so they can read it and write their own little quotes. If you ever find a little notebook full of quotes on every page plz let me know.

~ Wanderer ~
A wanderer am I, traveling along the mountain sky, just me and I. A wanderer am I seeing the ancient forest gloom like a forgotten tomb, there I do so loom. A wanderer am I, traveling to the windy sea, not one, but only me. A wanderer am I, traveling far and wide to see all with my eye before I die, just me and I. A wanderer I am true and through, traveling to tell my tale to one like you. Yes, a wanderer I am, a wanderer I shall always be, my spirit and me, for everlasting eternity.
