This seems to be an increasing trend with Paladins. all these new job traits SE has added has caused an interesting effect.
Now, with MOST jobs, you level it to 75, merit it, and stay within the usual traditional notions of what the job can and cannot do. Tanks don't DD, melee doesn't nuke, etc etc. If you want to try something outside your normal role in a party, level a different job. Some people lose their minds and try anyway, with varying degrees of success.
Some jobs, as a collective class, basically go Insane and go outside their boundaries, because it turns out they CAN.
Beastmaster was first, and I suspect it was due to that ancient idiocy of the original Brady Games guide that said having a Beastmaster in your party would gimp your experience.
Party: Blarg! We don't want you in our party! Brady said it would fuxx0r our XP! XP per hour! Gibber froth!
Beastmaster: Well, that sucks... hmmm, I wonder if I could get any XP on my own by charming these EM mobs here, and using them to fight those T mobs there...
And Beastmaster has never looked back, now the de-facto solo job, and the one to whom the 'normal' rules don't apply.
Next up was Redmage. Used to be Redmage subbed WHM or BLM, and NOTHING ELSE, and if you did, you were a n00b. But one day one Redmag tried subbing Ninja...
Redmage: Hmmm, this is neat! I've got Shadows AND Phalanx!... Hmmmm... I've got this Seal of Genbu collecting dust in my inventory... I wonder for a larf how long I'd last?
And yet another job goes insane.
And now Paladin. We have auto-refresh, rapid TP gain through shield blocks, magic damage mitigation, lower spell interrupt rates (Due to shield blocks), natural enhancing skill (To make use of mage subs), high defense, high weapon skill, our own Convert-like ability (Chivalry), a Debuff blocking ability (Fealty), etc.
Paladin: Hmmm... I wonder if I subbed Redmage or Ninja if I could beat an Avatar Prime solo?
So, congrats fellow Paladins. We have officially, as a class, gone Insane. Now we can get together with the Redmages and Beastmasters and smile at the other jobs and say;
"Uh... yeah... actually, we don't really need you guys anymore."
And then SE will nerf us.
