I knew it was coming. My PS2 has been having trouble reading certain game discs for at least a year now. It started with Gran Turismo 4, which it wouldn't read at all. Then, recently, it was having a lot of trouble with FFXII, although it would still play it after a reboot or two. Then, just yesterday, when I booted up the PS2 it made some god-awful clicking and grinding sounds and immediately displayed the "cannot read disc" screen on my TV. See, usually, when it is having issues with the disc, it takes about a minute for it to actually say it can't read it, but this was immediate. I tried another PS2 disc that its never had problems reading. Same thing. I tried a PS1 game disc and a normal DVD. I got the same thing both times. So, I cashed in all my store credit and took down some old PS2 and PSP games that I no longer play, and got myself a new (yet used) PS2 slimline. Man, that thing is TINY! So, now I have a new PS2 that should last me until I get my PS3 sometime next year. I bought the extra warrenty on it, as well, just in case. Now, I can finally finish up all the optional stuff I have left to do in FFXII.

Bleh my Ps2 was doing that for a while when I had it lying flat, then I read somewhere that's supposed to be bad for it O.o So I had it on it's side and it started playing again, then lately it was giving me that disc error, so I started playing it lying flat again, the error disapeared...
I hope it lasts until we can get a Ps3 ^.^

Actually, laying it on its side is bad for it, theoretically. That's why they designed the PS2 slimline to sit flat. When the disc spins on its side, it is unbalanced and wears more at the mechanisms that spin it and hold it in place.
Also the reason why the majority of disc players of any sort sit flat instead of sideways.
Still, I had mine sitting up for the first couple years or so that I had it, because I didn't have room to lay it flat. The slimline has a spring-loaded opening mechanism from the top, so there's no way you could operate it easily on its side.

its funny the PS2 was once the king or prince (if you liked Xbox) but now its out dated and would be a better paper weight

Master...in a way you're right, but consider this...
The next generation of Sony consoles JUST came out. When the PS2 was released, the PS1 still sold more than the PS2 for the first six months (mainly due to supply problems, but still) after the PS2 release.
The same will most likely be the same here, as the PS2 slimline sees price drops over the holiday season (although, again I'm sure much of it has to do with supply issues with the PS3).
Now, on the gaming front, look at it this way. There are still A LOT of good, quality games coming out for the PS2 over the next six months. This is something that Nintendo and Microsoft fail to do. When their next gen systems come out, the previous one is immediately dumped for favor of next gen production.
Yet, the PS2 has FFXII, God of War 2, Guitar Hero 2, Rogue Galaxy and a few other very popular games and sequels that are coming out in the next few months.
In fact, from what I've seen of PS3 graphics, FFXII blows it all away, and its a PS2 game! Release game graphics have never, ever lived up to the system's potential because the developers are still new to that console.
So, don't be so quick to discount your PS2, especially if you don't have a PS3 yet. There are a lot of good games that came out recently or will be out in the next few months that will most likely run laps around the majority of next gen games we'll see over that time period.

Well well my PS2 has also passed today at lunch. I was starting a new FF12 game when I had to pause it to go do something else for a few minutes. As I came back and pushed the start button I lost the screen but the music still played so I waited, and waited.... Then I pushed reset, only to be faced with the inevitable disc read error. I tried most games I have, nothing works!
R.I.P PS2 it's been fun, what to do now get your baby brother the slim line or just play FFXI until I can get the Ps3.. hmmm...
Also I wouldn't say FF12's graphics blows PS3's out of anywhere, it's a wonderfully done PS2 title but from what I've seen of PS3 gaphics, it's down right incredible what that machine will do/does.

RIP my first dreamcast, 2 GBAs (one of witch died by Maceing, and the other stolen out of my backpack(the hunt is never ending)), my PS1 wherever you are, and many many many Ps1 memory cards.
